Developing and delivering phage-based technologies in the UK
The Innovate UK Phage Innovation Network (Phage IN) has released a report outlining the current capacity for growth in phage-based technologies (PBTs) in the UK. The report, backed by phage experts, the wider microbiology and antimicrobial resistance communities, and industry experts, highlights the limited translation of phage knowledge into real-world solutions across sectors. The network was launched in February 2023 to support UK phage research and development and improve access to PBTs. The report supports the 2019 20-year vision for antimicrobial resistance and the national action plan: Confronting antimicrobial resistance 2024 to 2029. Key actions suggested include establishing a Good Manufacturing Practice manufacturing capability for PBTs and cost-benefit analyses of PBT use in different sectors. The report is intended for innovators, policy makers, phage sector stakeholders, and stakeholders in human health, animal health, food safety, crop production, aquaculture, and water sanitation and surveillance.
